J&K Police creates 4 posts of Deputy SPs to counter terrorism in Rajouri, Poonch and Reasi districts

JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir Police has created additional posts of four Deputy Superintendent of Police to counter terrorism in Pir Panjal region of Jammu. Two Deputy SP posts have been added in Rajouri district while one in Poonch and Reasi district each. 

As per order issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, DySP Anjana and DySP Sumit Bhagat have been posted as Deputy Superintendent of Police, in the Police Component in Rajouri, while DySP Umer Urfan has been posted in Police Component Poonch, and Rajesh Chandan has been posted as DySP Police Component Reasi. The order was issued by DG J&K Police RR Swain for creation of new posts in the Police Component which is Anti Terror Unit of J&K Police.

The addition of two new posts of Deputy Superintendents in the Police Component, which oversees the Counter Insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, have taken the total strength of Deputy Superintendents in the Police Component in the Rajouri district to three, while in Poonch, the tally now stands at two. The district of Reasi, which has witnessed a major encounter this year, has also got deployment of one DySP in its Police Component for the first time in the last 10 years. 

Additionally, the strength of Police Component in Jammu and Srinagar districts, has been enhanced to its full capacity by the Police Chief, in a move to strengthen counter-terrorism grid in the Union Territory. At present, except for Udhampur, all districts of Jammu have Deputy Superintendents of Police in their Police Component to keep tab on activities that are detrimental to security of the country. 

Over the last two-and-a-half years, the regions of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu have seen a relentless series of terror attacks, specifically aimed at the Indian Army, resulting in the tragic loss of 33 braveheart soldiers. It all began on October 11, 2021, with an attack on the Rashtriya Rifles Unit in Poonch's Dera Ki Gali area, which eventually claimed the lives of five Army personnel, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO).

Subsequent attacks occurred on October 15, 2021, April 20, 2023, and August 11, 2022, in Poonch and Rajouri, resulting in more casualties among the Rashtriya Rifles Unit.

The assaults persisted with strikes on May 5 this year, targetting the Special Forces Unit PARA in Rajouri's Kandi, and then on November 22, in Bajimaal & Rajouri, affecting both the Rashtriya Rifles and Special Forces Units.

Unfortunately, the toll rose again on December 21 in Dera Ki Gali, Poonch, highlighting the tragic loss of four more Army personnel.
