New Delhi: Actor-turned-politician and Rajya Sabha MP, Jaya Bachchan got furious in the Parliament on Monday after she was addressed with her husband Amitabh Bachchan’s name. She immediately objected to the Rajya Sabha chairman, when she was addressed as 'Jaya Amitabh Bachchan' by Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh as the name was mentioned in the Parliament's records. Registering an objection to it, she insisted that she should be addressed as Jaya Bachchan only and said that it has become a trend now to address women’s names with their husbands as if "women have no existence of their own”.
Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh called her 'Jaya Amitabh Bachchan' to which she strongly objected. The Samajwadi Party MP stood up from her seat and said that he could have called her just Jaya Bachchan. To this Singh explained that he addressed her by that name as it was mentioned in the documents.

While objecting to the address, she asserted, "Sir, only Jaya Bachchan would have sufficed." In response, the Deputy Chairman, smiling, reminded her that her full name in the records was "Jaya Amitabh Bachchan".
However, the Samajwadi Party leader was unsatisfied with the Chair's response and said that it is like saying that women will be known only by their husbands' names. They have no existence of their own. They have no achievements of their own. She said, "This is something new, that women will be recognised by the name of their husbands. They (women) have no existence or achievements of their own".
