Jharkhand follows other non-BJP ruled states; withdraws general consent given to CBI

JMM-led government in Jharkhand on Thursday withdraw general consent accorded to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate cases, becoming sixth state to do so in recent past. Most of n-BJP ruled states have taken away consent given to CBI, which means that  central ncy has to seek permission from
state government to probe each case. Jharkhand Chief Minister's Office issued a statement saying that Home department withdrew its consent granted on February 19, 1996 by n Bihar government to CBI to conduct investigations and raids.

Under Section 6 of Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, all states except Delhi and union territories have discretion to give ir consent to CBI for a probe in state.

On October 21, in a significant development,  Uddhav Thackeray led-Maharashtra government withdrew general consent given to Central Bureau of Investigation to probe cases in state.  state government's move assumes significance as re was speculation that CBI could expand its scope to alleged TRP scam being probed by Mumbai Police. While general consent is rmally given by all states to facilitate CBI conduct a seamless investigation into cases of corruption against central government employees in concerned state, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Andhra Presh have withdrawn it in recent past.

Following suit, Kerala on Wednesday decided to withdraw general consent accorded to CBI. Kerala, ruled by CPI(M)-led LDF, became fifth state after Maharashtra, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh to withdraw general consent. decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, an official statement said. lone Left-ruled state in country took key decision at a time when CBI was probing various alleged irregularities in its ambitious Life Mission project, a housing initiative for poor.
