In a bizarre tradition, snake charmers in Jamshedpur district get themselves bitten by the serpent with a belief that it will immune them from its venom

In a bizarre trition, snake charmers in a vill in Jamshedpur district get mselves bitten by serpent with a belief that it will immune m from its vem. se residents of Shankarda vill, located 50 kilometres from Jamshedpur have been performing this ritual to please Goddess Manasa Devi whom y believe to be Goddess of snakes.

Claiming it to be a 100-year old 'cure ritual' dedicated to serpent divinity and tritional methods, a large number of tribals take part in ritual. Over generations, this tribe has thrived on catching vemous snakes and displaying m for a living.

"Every year, we worship Manasa Devi who is considered as Goddess of snakes. This pooja is being performed for last 100 years. Snake charmers sit on a chariot and perform pooja to please Goddess. People wish also fulfilled during this pooja," Karunamay Mandal, a local said.

In this ritual observed once in a year, snake charmers ride on a chariot where snakes bit m. Locals believe that vem will have impact on snake charmers during pooja if y are on chariot.

Garba with snakes

Earlier, two women and a girl were held along with two ors after a video showed m performing Garba dance with snakes in ir hands in Junagh district of Gujarat, a forest department official said on October 12. All of m were booked under Wildlife (Protection) Act and held on Thursday, official said.
