JNU to not discontinue Professor Emeritus status: HRD Ministry
The HRD Ministry said that there is no move by the JNU to discontinue anyone's Professor Emeritus status. In July professors were asked to submit their CV.

HRD Ministry stated that re is move by JNU to discontinue anyone's Professor Emeritus status, clearing air around controversy over university seeking CVs of acemicians holding position of Professor Emeritus, including that of historian Romila Thapar, on Monday.

"We have discussed with JNU Vice-Chancellor controversy regarding Professor Emeritus status in JNU. re is move to discontinue Professor Emeritus status to anyone, especially respected acemicians. university is only following provisions of ordinance," HRD Secretary R Subramanyam said.

In July, professors holding position were asked to submit ir CV by varsity's registrar so that y could evaluate professors' eligibility to continue at post.
Thapar, a ted scientist R Rajaraman, and former JNU VC Asis Datta, are among 12 Emeritus Professors above of 75, who have received letters. Apart from m, 25 acemicians currently positions in university.

registrar's communication stems from a resolution of JNU's executive council on August 23, 2018, which revised guidelines for designation as an emeritus professor.

JNU says it is as per ordinance
Shortly after JNUTA statement, university said it is following its ordinance "in letter and spirit" about appointment of Professor Emeritus at JNU.
"As per ordinance, university is required to write to all those who have attained of 75 years to kw ir availability and willingness to continue ir association with university. Letters have been written only to those emeritus professors who fall in this category," it said.

It also explained that se letters were t for discontinuation but an informed review by executive council, highest statutory body of university, and it is consistent with practices at or reputed universities such as MIT and Princeton University.

Thapar, however, is unwilling to share her CV with University. She states that it goes against basics, as according to her, status is given for a Lifetime.
