Justin Trudeau Meets PM Modi In Laos, Says Talked About 'Safety Of Canadians'

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday met Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in Laos on the sidelines of the ASEAN-India Summit.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday met Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in Laos on the sidelines of the ASEAN-India Summit. Following the meeting, Trudeau said that he spoke to the prime minister of India about the “safety of Canadians”. Trudeau on Friday said he had a "brief exchange" with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a summit in Laos, during which, he spoke to PM Modi about the "safety of Canadians" and "upholding the rule of law", alluding to his previous accusations against New Delhi's involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year.

Talking to reporters at a press conference in Laos, Trudeau said, "I emphasised that there is work that we need to do." 

"I won't go into details about what we talked about, but what I have said many times is that the safety of Canadians and upholding the rule of law is one of the fundamental responsibilities of any Canadian government, and that's what I'll stay focused on," he added.

Meanwhile, at the summit, PM Narendra Modi , on Friday, met his counterparts from several countries including Japan, New Zealand, Thailand and others in Laos's Vientiane where he presented culture-riched gifts. Among the notable gifts, PM Modi gave New Zealand's Prime Minister Christopher Luxon a pair of majestic silver lamps adorned with rubies from Maharashtra.
