Kapil Dev to be the first Chancellor of Haryana Sports University
Minister Anil Vij announced that former Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev would be appointed as the first Chancellor of Haryana Sports University at Rai, Sonepat.

On Saturday, Haryana Health, Sports, Science and Techlogy Minister Anil Vij anunced that former Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev would be appointed as first Chancellor of Haryana Sports University at Rai, Sonepat. Initially, Haryana Cabinet decided to set up a Sports University in July 2019. Subsequently, Legislative Assembly of Haryana passed requisite legislation in last month’s Monsoon Session to pave way for creation of Sports University. Till w, Motilal Nehru School of Sports h been operational at Rai.

Amendment to facilitate Dev's appointment
At time of Haryana Cabinet's approval to proposal, Vij h stated that Sport University's Vice-Chancellor would eir be a sportsperson of international repute or a rewned sports ministrator or a rewned sports acemician. rmally, Goverr of Haryana is Chancellor of every public university in state. However, law was amended specifically in case of new university. This has ensured that a private individual like Kapil Dev, would get chance to directly assume office of Chancellor.

Objectives of Haryana Sports University
While it would be first full-fledged sports university in state, it is overall third such university to be set up by a state government. Swarnim Gujarat Sports University and Tamil Nu Physical Education and Sports University are or examples. Similarly, Union Cabinet h cleared proposal to create India's first National Sports University in Imphal, Manipur. According to Vij, new university would have powers to conduct acemic and training programmes in physical education and sports sciences. He furr mentioned that disciplines of sports techlogy, sports medicine, sports manment, sports infrastructure engineering, sports psychology, sports nutrition, sports journalism and sports marketing would fall within its ambit.

Kapil Dev, World Cup hero
Considered as India's greatest fast-bowling all-rounder, Dev scored more than 9,000 runs and picked 687 wickets in international cricket. His stellar contribution as a player helped India win Cricket World Cup in 1983 under his leership. He was part of Cricket visory Committee (CAC) along with Anshuman Gaekw and Shantha Rangaswamy that selected Ravi Shastri as India's He Coach recently. y also interviewed several or candidates including Tom Moody, Mike Hesson, Lalchand Rajput and Robin Singh.
