Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh promoted Vir Chakra awardee on Friday from his earlier rank of Senior Constable, in which capacity he was managing traffic in Sangrur district till July 26.
Chief Minister said he h merely set right wrong perpetrated on Satpal by previous S-BJP government, which h igred valour of soldier, and failed to give him recognition and respect he deserved. He also said he was t aware of situation and what he h done w was merely a case of `too little too late' for brave soldier. "This should have been done at time of Satpal's recruitment in 2010," he ded.

chief minister on Monday said his government will formulate a policy to award a one-rank promotion for any defence or police personnel or officer from Punjab winning a gallantry award in war or in peacetime. If any such officers and personnel wish to join Punjab Police, ir service and bravery would be given due recognition, said Chief Minister, while piping stars of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) on uniform of Kargil war hero Satpal Singh.

policy to be drafted by his government will leave scope for such injustice, Captain Amarinder said, making it clear that policy would cover police gallantry award winners, including JCOs and NCOs, in dition to jawans of defence forces. Chief Minister said his government was committed to welfare of soldiers/ex-soldiers, whose sacrifices to nation and its people could t be allowed to go unrecognised. He said he was pained on hearing that Satpal was working as a senior traffic constable and wanted to give dignity and respect that brave soldier deserved.
On Friday - 20th anniversary of Kargil War - Amarinder h ordered double promotion for Satpal, lamenting that valiant soldier h t been given due recognition at time of his recruitment into Punjab Police by erstwhile S-BJP government in 2010.

Amarinder issued orders for his promotion as ASI, directing DGP to relax Rule 12.3 of Punjab Police Rules. Chief Minister also authorized DGP to grant required relaxation in (DOB 07-11-1973) to Satpal, who also belonged to Chief Minister's 8 Sikhs battalion.
About Kargil braveheart & Vir Chakra awardee Satpal Singh
Satpal Singh, who joined Punjab Police after his discharge from Army, was posted in Dras sector during Operation Vijay. Part of team that helped Indian Army capture Tiger Hill, Satpal killed Captain Karnal Sher Khan of rrn Light Infantry and three ors. Sher Khan was later conferred Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan's highest gallantry award, on recommendation of Indian brige commander who vouched for his bravery on icy heights. Singh h received Vir Chakra for his bravery.
