Karnataka: Cabinet Minister CC Patil visits flood hit areas in Gadag

Cabinet Minister CC Patil visited the flood-affected areas in Gadag District of Karnataka. The visit came after the minister faced criticisms by residents for not visiting the area. The minister reached the Sevala Nagar village and talked to people about the problems they face. The minister assured people of the action the authorities are taking despite the lack of funds. 

'The government doesn't have money'

"You are aware of how much money the government is spending in flood-affected areas. You even know that the government doesn't have money. We are also not getting our MLA funds. We will see later if you want to leave this village and want to shift to a different village. I will make the arrangements," Patil said.

Torrential rains hit Karnataka 

Torrential rains that hit the state of Karnataka on October 18, are still on and have affected many villages, especially in North Karnataka. According to sources, the death toll due to the rains has gone up to 13. Reports also suggest huge damage to the livestock. 10,000 houses have been damaged due to floods, this included 202 houses that were damaged completely, of which 160 are from Haveri district.

Karnataka on Alert 

To combat the damage, the state government has set up relief camps as many as 3,734 people have been rehabilitated in seven relief camps in Bagalkote. Moreover, 7,220 people have been rehabilitated across Karnataka in 28 relief camps. Around four Additional Directorate General of Public Information Indian Army (ADGPI) teams were pressed into action for relief and rescue operations in the flood-hit Raichur district. 

The reservoirs in the Krishna and Cauvery basin in Karnataka are either at or near full reservoir level, the situation report by CMO stated. The discharge in the reservoirs has been increased in order to keep an appropriate buffer. Officials in the state are on high alert as the rainfall is expected to continue for the next 2-3 days across the state. A warning was also issued by the IMD on Thursday alerting the citizens of high rainfall. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that scattered moderate rainfall along with heavy rainfall in isolated areas is likely in Belagavi, Bagalkot, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Ballari and Koppal districts. Similarly, a red warning was issued by the IMD for all three coastal Karnataka districts - Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada.
