Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Sunday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and sought Rs. 2,000 crore as urgent relief for flood-affected State. Speaking to reporters, Chief Minister said that Centre has assured that a decision on providing assistance from National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF) will be taken after a central team, which is assessing extent of dam in State, submits its report in next two-three days.

Karnataka seeks flood relief funds

"We have demanded Rs 2,000 crore central assistance for flood relief. We have resource constraint. Despite all, state government has released about Rs 1,000 crore so far. Release of central funds will ease burden on us," Yediyurappa told reporters.

Most likely a decision on this matter will be taken after Prime Minister returns to India, he ded. Shah has assured that flood relief and or emergency works will t be affected in State as y have been exempted from purview of poll code, according to Yeddyurappa. By-polls in State will be held on October 21. Karnataka deputy chief ministers Ashwath Narayan and Laxman Savi and home minister Basavaraj Bommai were also present in meeting. State Government has estimated Rs. 38,451 crore dam due to floods in state.

Karnataka was gripped with a massive deluge following incessant rains in August. By time, se floods receded, over 61 people were de and around 15 people have been missing ever since. Apart from this, lakhs were displaced in various parts of sourn state. Mass evacuations and rescue and relief operations were carried out by different organisations like National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were roped in. In dition, Indian Navy and Indian Army personnel were also deployed to assist with rescue and relief ops. Relief camps were set up across State in order to help those affected. Places like Belgaum, Bijapur, Raichur, and Uttara Karnataka were among worst-hit places in state.
