Karnataka: College makes students wear cardboard boxes during exam

Students of a college in Karnataka were made to sit for their Chemistry exam wearing cardboard boxes that covered their heads to prevent them from cheating.

On Friday, students of Bhagat Pre-University (PU) College in Haveri, Karnataka were me to sit for ir Chemistry exam wearing cardboard boxes that covered ir hes. boxes only h ir front side open with or sides closed. This was to ensure that y would t be able to cheat. After a college official shared photos regarding same on social networking website Facebook, this incident came to light. However, both education department as well as PU Board did t take this lightly and sought an explanation from college.

‘Just an experiment’ 

In 2018, re were multiple reports of cheating across various educational institutions in Karnataka. Despite repeated warnings, students continued to cheat. This was apparently rationale behind introducing this move. A director of college, MB Sateesh, maintained that y did t intend to harass students. He claimed that students h granted ir consent for this “experiment”. 

He said, “We implemented this idea to curb malpractice and t to harass students. This is just an experiment. We discussed it with students and took ir consent before implementing it.”

‘Contemplating disciplinary action’ 

SC Peerje, deputy director of PU Board confirmed that disciplinary action against college was being contemplated. Calling it an “inhuman” idea, he called upon colleges to stick to tritional methods of preventing malpractices.

Peerje remarked, “When I got a mess on this, I immediately rushed to college and ordered manment to stop this practice. I also issued a tice to college manment and am contemplating disciplinary action against m for implementing this idea.” He ded, “This is inhuman and civilized society will never accept such an idea. I hope this is never repeated again. re are tritional ways of managing students and preventing malpractice in examination hall and college can resort to m."
