Gauging the possibility of heavy rains in the south interior Karnataka over the coming days, the Indian Metrological Department has issued a yellow alert (heavy rain) for Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural including Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru, Mandya, Ramanagara and Chamarajanagar.

The IMD affirmed that the districts will be witnessing heavy rainfall due to the formation of a cyclonic depression over the Bay of Bengal. The weather forecasting agency added that the depression will be approaching towards the coast of neighbouring Tamil Nadu, resulting in heavy rainfall in the said areas.

Bengaluru receives heavy rainfall

Bengaluru city witnessed heavy rainfall on Thursday. As of 1.30 pm, the city recorded 4.2 mm rainfall. The Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli registered 3.8 mm rainfall. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) had informed that the cyclonic formations over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining the south Andaman Sea lay over the southeast Bay of Bengal and its neighbouring areas.

"Under the influence of the cyclonic circulations, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood during the next 12 hours. It is most likely to move west-northwestwards, concentrate into a depression, and reach near north Tamil Nadu coast by the early morning of November 11," the Centre had said.

City to witness cloudy conditions with incessant rains: KSNDMC

It added that from Thursday, November 11 to Monday, November 15, people in Bengaluru will be witnessing completely cloudy conditions with continuous rains over the city. The coming system is likely to influence North Interior Karnataka districts from November 12 or 13, the Centre further informed. The IMD has further warned eight districts in the state with an orange alert for Thursday, November 11. The districts include Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Chitradurga, Tumakuru, Bellary, Shivamogga and Davanagere.

IMD issues red alert for certain TN, Pondicherry districts

Meanwhile, the IMD has also issued a red alert for certain districts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry for Thursday which includes Chennai, Kallakurichi, Tiruvallur, Salem, Tirupattur, Ranipet, and Vellore. Heavy rain across Tamil Nadu has caused a flood-like situation in several areas and as a result, the waterlogged neighbourhoods have affected the daily routine of people leaving them stranded. Also, schools and colleges have declared a holiday due to the rain forecast by the IMD.
