Karnataka reports 2,496 new COVID-19 cases,87 fatalities

Karnataka reported 2,496 new COVID-19 cases and 87 fatalities,taking the infection count to 44,077 and death toll to 842, the state health department said.

Against the forecast of 25,000 active coronavirus cases by August 15 by the State's COVID War Room, there were 25,839 active cases in the state today including 540 in the ICUs, a department bulletin said. There were 1,142 discharges, taking the total discharges in the state to 17,390. Most of the deaths occurred in Bengaluru (56), a single-day highest for the city. With this, the total fatalities in Bengaluru reached 377, the department said.

According to the bulletin, the total positive cases reported in the city is 20,969 with 1,267 fresh cases while 4,992 patients have been discharged so far. There are still 15,599 active cases in the city.

Other districts: 125 fresh COVID cases in Mysuru district, 121 in Kalaburagi, 100 in Dharwad, 99 in Ballari, 98 in Koppal, 91 in Dakshina Kannada, 78 in Bagalkote, 73 in Udupi, 64 in Uttara Kannada, 64 in Belagavi, 52 in Vijayapura, 47 in Tumakuru, 42 in Bidar; 38 in Mandya, 25 in Raichur, 17 in Davangere, 14 in Bengaluru rural, 13 in Chikkaballapura, 11 in Kolar, 10 cases each in Kodagu and Chitradurga.

Cases were also reported in Gadag, Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Yadagiri, and Ramanagara, the health department said. Ballari with five deaths recorded the second highest number of fatalities after Bengaluru.

Four deaths each occurred in Mysuru, Dakshina Kannada and Bagalkote, three in Chikkamagaluru, two each in Chamarajanagar and Raichur and one each in Kalaburagi, Dharwad, Davangere and Hassan.

Of the 87 people, who died, at least 18 patients did not have any pre-medical conditions and 81 of them were above 40. The dead include a 23-year-old youth from Bengaluru.

The department said 23,674 samples were tested today of which 19,603 came negative.
