Mangaluru: In a tragic incident, several workers trapped under debris after earth caved in at a construction site in Karnataka’s Mangaluru leading to a panic like situation in the area. It is being said that due to heavy rainfall, a portion of earth near a pit caved in and workers working there were trapped.
According to the reports, there are information about two workers being trapped in debris after the incident, following which the local police, the fire department personnel and other officials from concerned departments rushed to the spot and initiated a rescue operation.
The incident occurred at a construction site at Balmatta in Mangaluru. Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal said that during the rescue operation, Raj Kumar (18), a resident of Bihar, was rescued while efforts were on to rescue the other victim identified as Chandan (30), also a native of Bihar.
The NDRF and fire and emergency department personnel were pressed into the rescue operation immediately, the police official said.
Following the incident, senior police officials rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. During the preliminary inquiry, it was found that a lack of safety measures at the construction site which belongs to a private builder was the the reason for the mishap. The earth has been vertically excavated for about 20 feet for the foundation of the building.
The excavation process is still underway to rescue the trapped.
