Who Is Firdousa Bashir?

Firdousa Bashir's artistic journey began after she completed her 12th grade in her village, Kehribal. Instead of pursuing a conventional career, she chose to study Islamic literature at a seminary, where she discovered her passion for calligraphy.

A YouTube video of a calligrapher motivated her, and she decided to pursue the art form independently, despite initial family skepticism. Over time, her dedication convinced her family to support her.

As her skills grew, so did her commitment to preserving Islamic calligraphy in Kashmir. She organised workshops and exhibitions to promote appreciation for this ancient art form among local youth.

Her success has positioned her as a role model, encouraging other aspiring artists in the region to follow their dreams.

What is Calligraphy?

Calligraphy is the art of beautiful handwriting, has deep historical roots and is a revered practice in many cultures.

In calligraphy, we use basic strokes to form letters and words. It is very doable even if you don’t have great handwriting.

Great calligraphy can be achieved by deliberately practicing those basic strokes. It is usually done with a nib, broad-tip pens, brush pens, and other instruments or tools.

In Kashmir, it serves as a bridge connecting the region’s rich cultural heritage with modern artistic expression.
