Kerala government in constant contact with health ministry after Nipah virus confirmation: CM

The Kerala government on Tuesday, June 4 said it is in "constant contact" with the Union Health ministry in the wake of confirmation about Nipah infecting a person in the state, a year after the deadly virus claimed 17 lives

 Kerala government on Tuesday, June 4 said it is in "constant contact" with Union Health ministry in wake of confirmation about Nipah infecting a person in state, a year after dely virus claimed 17 lives.

State Health Minister, K K Shailaja, confirmed on Tuesday that a 23-year-old college student, who was undergoing treatment for fever in Kochi, has been infected by virus. Pathological samples from youth h been sent to National Institute of Virology, Pune, which confirmed that youth h been infected by dely virus.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said re was need to panic as  health network would rise up to challenge.

"We are in constant contact with Union ministry for health. A team of experts have arrived in Kochi. ir guidelines will also be used to tackle virus outbreak," Vijayan said in a Twitter post.

Under supervision of state health minister, all necessary preparations have been completed, Vijayan said, ding those who came in contact with infected person, have been traced and are under observation.

Urging everyone to follow instructions of health department,  chief minister warned that stringent action would be taken against those spreing misinformation.

In May last year, Nipah h claimed 17 lives -- 14 in Kozhikode and three in neighbouring Malappuram. deceased included a nurse, who h taken care of one of victims.

Meanwhile, health department has sounded alert in Kollam, as three students, who h come in contact with affected youth are from district. Isolation wards have been opened in district government hospitals, including Parippali medical college re, health department officials said.
