Kolkata Doctor Rape-murder Protests: Delhi Police Issues Prohibitory Measures in Several Areas

Delhi Police issued prohibitory orders in central areas of the city in response to protest calls by multiple organizations against Kolkata rape-murder case.

New Delhi: The Delhi Police has issued prohibitory orders in central areas of the national capital on Friday in response to protest calls by multiple organizations against the Kolkata rape-murder case, officials said. Deployment of police personnel has been increased and Section 163 (prohibitory orders) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has also been imposed near the Parliament and other parts of central Delhi, they added.

A Delhi Police officer noted that the city remains on alert due to Independence Day celebrations. With the protests announced, traffic at some intersections in central Delhi has been diverted, he said.

The alleged rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at the state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata have sparked widespread protests across the country.

Several resident doctors' associations (RDAs), including those from AIIMS and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, have announced a protest meet near Nirman Bhawan on Friday.

The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) has called for a candle march at India Gate at 6 p.m.

Delhi University's Krantikari Yuva Sangathan has announced a protest meet at 2 p.m. at Mandi House, while Congress's student wing NSUI has called for a protest at 7:30 p.m. at Jantar Mantar.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of women participated in another march organized by the RSS-linked Nari Shakti Forum over alleged atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh. The march began at Mandi House and will conclude at Jantar Mantar.
