Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached the protest side in front of state health department headquarters in Salt Lake in Kolkata on Saturday amid growing outrage and protest by doctors after rape and murder of 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

At the protest site, CM Mamata Banerjee addressed and interacted with the agitating junior doctors and urged them to return to work.

"I assure you that I will study your demands, take action if someone is found guilty, If I came to the protest site, I am on your side" said Mamata Banerjee at the protest site. CM Mamata Banerjee also announced at the address ,of dissolving patient welfare committee of RG Kar hospital where doctor was raped, murdered.

“I came to meet you as your 'didi' not as chief minister” said Mamata while addressing the protesting doctors, in the meantime the doctors were raising slogans of 'we want justice' and ‘justice for Abhaya’

“I urge CBI to give a death sentence within 3 months. I have spent sleepless nights as you have been protesting on the road amid rains”, stated Mamata Banerjee at the address.

'Just a Media Photo-Op…': BJP 's Amit Malviya

Meanwhile, BJP IT Cell Head Amit Malviya took a dig at Mamata Banerjee on his visit to the protest site at Salt Lake and said that she made a 5-minute speech, only to be accosted by slogans for justice.

'She didn’t interact or for that matter even hear the protesting doctors. This was just a media photo-op to sow seeds of suspicion among the medical fraternity." posted Malviya on X

On Thursday, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee urged the protesting doctors to return to work, adding that she has no greed for her CM post, but is more concerned about justice for the RG Kar rape-murder victim and treatment for ordinary citizens. CM Banerjee said, “I am ready to resign from the Chief Minister of West Bengal. I am not concerned about the post. I want justice for the victim, I am only concerned about ordinary people getting medical service.”

The protesting junior doctors accused the West Bengal administration of being inflexible by not permitting live streaming of the meeting to resolve the RG Kar stalemate. They also clarified that they had not demanded CM Banerjee's resignation, despite her offer. One of the doctors said, “The chief minister's remarks are unfortunate. We wanted the talks to take place. However, the state administration was adamant about not allowing live streaming of the meeting. Our demands are justified. We wanted live streaming for the transparency of the meeting.”

All About Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case

On August 9, the body of the 31-year-old medic was discovered in a semi-naked state in the seminar hall of the hospital.

Autopsy reports reveal that the victim was sexually assaulted and then murdered. Her neck was broken, and she suffered severe injuries, with multiple body parts, including her private areas, bleeding.

Sanjoy Roy, a civic worker, has been arrested in the crime. Roy has confessed to the crime but reportedly shows no remorse, according to local media.

In response to the widespread outrage, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 13, amid a nationwide call for justice. This decision follows West Bengal Chief Minister  Mamata Banerjee 's promise to initiate a CBI probe if the state's investigation failed to produce results by Sunday
