Kolkata: A junior doctor on hunger strike over the recent rape and murder of a female medic at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College was hospitalised on Saturday after his health worsened, officials said.

The protest, which began earlier this month, has already seen two other medics hospitalised as their health worsened during the fast.

Doctor’s Condition Worsens

Anustup Mukherjee, a junior doctor at Medical College, Kolkata, was rushed to the hospital after his colleagues noticed severe symptoms, including blood in his stool and intense stomach pain. His condition is reportedly "serious," and doctors on-site recommended immediate treatment. “He was in a bad state and needed urgent care,” one of the protesting doctors told PTI.

Mukherjee, who had been part of the indefinite fast, was taken to Medical College, Kolkata, for treatment.

Hunger Strike Sparks Health Concerns

The hunger strike, which started on October 5 in Kolkata's Esplanade area, has seen growing concern for the health of the protesting junior doctors. Earlier in the day, Alok Varma from North Bengal Medical College became the second doctor to be hospitalized, following Aniket Mahato, who was admitted to the ICU of RG Kar Hospital three days earlier.

One protesting doctor blamed the state government for the deteriorating health of the fasting medics. “The government’s inaction is putting lives at risk. More doctors are falling ill as the protest goes on,” they said.
