‘Kolkata Police Stood As Mute Spectators’: Agitating Doctors Seek Prez, PM's Intervention

Kolkata: Doctors protesting at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical Centre and Hospital sent a letter to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urgently seeking their intervention to resolve the ongoing crisis surrounding the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the facility.

In their letter, the doctors detailed the violence and inaction they have faced. They described a recent incident where an unapprehended mob forcibly entered the RG Kar premises while state police reportedly did nothing to intervene. The doctors recounted their own fears as they sought shelter from the chaos.

“When the unapprehended mob barged the premises of the RG Kar medical college, the state police stood as mute spectators, while we the doctors ran to find shelters,” the protesting doctors wrote. 

The letter also highlighted a troubling history of violence at the hospital. The doctors mentioned that, in the past, interns such as Dr. Pratibaha Mukhopadhyay and Dr. Yash Tekwani were attacked by a mob of approximately 200 people following the death of a 75-year-old patient in the hospital.

“Violence in RG Kar has a long history. A couple of interns including Dr. Pratibha Mukhopadhyay and Dr Yash Tekwani were attacked by a mob of 200 people following the death of a 75-year-old in the hospital,” it further read. 

The protesting doctors are calling for immediate action to ensure their safety and address the systemic issues that have led to repeated incidents of violence. They hope that intervention from the highest levels of government will bring about a resolution and restore order at the medical centre.
