Kolkata: In the latest developments in the Kolkata rape and murder case, a key accused Sanjoy Roy, a police civic volunteer was using a motorcycle registered under the name of the police commissioner.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which is investigating the matter has been looking into Sanjoy's connections with Kolkata Police.
As this information emerged in media and social media, the Kolkata police issued a statement admitting that the bike was registered under the commissioner's name, however, it was a standard practice to register all government vehicles in the name of the police head.
"The bike used by Sanjoy Roy -- principal accused in the RG Kar Hospital alleged sexual assault and murder case -- which was seized by Kolkata Police before being handed over to the CBI, was registered in the name of the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata. Some individuals on social media are attempting to create confusion around this. To clarify, all government vehicles belonging to Kolkata Police are officially registered under the Commissioner of Police before being assigned to various units," the statement said.
Police Unleash Violence As Students Take To Kolkata Streets Against Mamata Govt
Earlier in the day, violence gripped West Bengal after students protest turned rough following police's use of tear gas, water cannons and lathi-charge to disperse the peaceful demonstrators.
Over 200 people were detained by the police while many instances of clashes between the students and police were seen in a 'People vs Mamata' showdown in the state.
Clashes broke out between police and protesters at different parts of Kolkata and its neighbouring Howrah on Tuesday, as the agitators tried to make their way through barricades to march towards the West Bengal secretariat 'Nabanna.'
"Why were we beaten by police? We did not break any law. We are holding a peaceful rally to demand justice for the deceased doctor. The chief minister should take responsibility and resign," said a woman protester.
The protesters were attempting to reach 'Nabanna' to demand the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the alleged rape-murder of a trainee doctor at state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital here earlier this month.
"Today we handled the situation well as we are well prepared. Intelligence inputs helped us, otherwise the situation could have been worse. In the state police area, we have arrested 94 people. We arrested 25 others yesterday," ADG (Law and Order) told reporters in Nabanna.
