Lahaul Spiti in Himachal to receive tourism boost with Rohtang tunnel
Lahaul-Spiti tribal district of Himachal Pradesh is all set to experience tourism boost in the region with the opening of new 8.8-km long Rohtang tunnel

With opening of new Rohtang tunnel, tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti in Himachal Presh is all set to experience tourism boost in region in December this year. Himachal Presh government and its tourism department are gearing up for this boost. A Tourism Infrastructure Sustainable Development Plan for district has been prepared by state tourism department. This plan includes provision of igloo-cum-glamping stays and a couple of allied activities for tourists at Sisu vill in Lahaul.
Tourism in valley
Lahaul and Spiti are two isolated Himalayan valleys of Himachal Presh that lie on Indo-Tibet border. It is spre over an area of 13,833 sq km and is one of popular tourist destinations of country. In last two deces, tourism has caught up fast in valley that captivates venture enthusiasts to visit here as it houses best treks and ski areas. It consists of historic temples and monasteries, lakes, glaciers, mountain peaks, and trekking routes. landscape of Spiti is similar to that of Tibet and is called 'Little Tibet'.

World's longest motorable tunnel
Rohtang Pass highway tunnel in Himalayas of Himachal Presh is an 8.8-km long horseshoe-shaped tunnel. construction of this motorway is one of most challenging tasks as it is world's longest motorable tunnel situated 3,000 meters above sea level, under 3,978-metre Rohtang Pass in Pir Panjal range and has 45 avalanche-prone spots and aims to provide all-season connectivity to landlocked Lahaul Valley from picturesque resort town of Manali.
construction of tunnel is likely to be completed by end of this year. tunnel even has self-escape sw galleries that have been designed for safety of motorists. length of gallery varies from 40 meters to 130 meters and would be constructed before tunnel completion. most ambitious and expensive undertaking of its kind, excavation of tunnel was completed in October 2017.

Hardship faced by Tourists
Earlier this year, around 2,000 tourists were stuck in different parts of tribal district Lahaul-Spiti. reason being heavy rains in region that damd Manali-Leh highway and Gramphu-Kaza ro at several places. rivulets flowing on way to se highways were flooded, hampering traffic movement completely. Due to heavy flooding in Teling nullah region, a large number of tourists were reportedly stuck at Koksar and Sissu.

Moreover, 400 vehicles were stuck on way between Koksar and Sissu. Around 150 tourists were rescued by Border Ros Organisation (BRO) from area and transported to safer places. Some tourists were stranded between Jispa and Darcha in Lahaul Spiti, waiting desperately for ro to open to move to ir respective destinations. telecommunication services are erratic in region ding to woes of tourists and locals alike.
