Panaji: A lawyer in Goa allegedly committed suicide after a woman Sub Inspector (SI) of the Goa Police conducted raids at his residence in search of his son. The incident sparked outrage among the lawyers in the state, following which, the Goa Police registered an FIR against the woman SI for allegedly abetting the suicide and initiated a legal probe.

According to a senior police official of the Goa Police, Advocate Jayant Prabhu had committed suicide at his residence in Davorlim village near Margao town on Thursday. Prabhu allegedly took the extreme step hours after a police team led by Sub Inspector Anoushka Parab carried out a raid at his house.

The police official stated that the police team was looking for Jayant Prabhu's son Pritesh, who was booked by the Margao police in a molestation case.

After the suicide by the lawyer, the South Goa Lawyers Association staged a protest in front of the office of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Santosh Desai seeking an FIR against SI Parab claiming she was named by the deceased in his suicide note.

Later, the deceased's son Ashish Prabhu filed a complaint against Parab, based on which she was charged with abetment of suicide.

Deputy SP Desai said the allegations by Prabhu's kin against Parab will be probed.

Further legal action into the matter is being taken.
