Woman’s body recovered from forest in Odisha’s Sambalpur
Close on the heels of an alleged rape-murder of a minor tribal girl in Odisha’s Balasore district, police on Sunday recovered the body of a 24-year-old woman in Sambalpur district.
The body was found in a jungle in the district's Naktideula area.
The woman had been missing since Friday after going to bathe at a spring near her village, according to a police complaint lodged by her family. Villagers reported finding her sandals, mobile phone, and clothes in a paddy field near the spring.

Gandhinagar, Gujarat: DYSP of State Monitoring Cell, K T Kamaliya says, "A case was registered in the Madhopura police station of Ahmedabad City in connection with the incident of dabba trading, gambling, cricket betting...The main accused in this was Harshal Jain. During the investigation, it was found that the main gambler of dabba trading was Deepak Thakkar. When we investigated him, his passport was found in Dubai. Based on this, a red corner notice was issued against him. An extradition request was sent. The Dubai police accepted it and we sent a team to arrest the accused...We have arrested 36 people in this case and a total case is of Rs. 2300 crore..."

Assam TMC president Ripun Bora quits party
Assam Trinamool Congress president Ripun Bora on Sunday resigned from the party, claiming that the people of the northeastern state consider it as a "regional party" of West Bengal and are "not willing to accept" it as their own.
In a letter to All India Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Bora, the former Rajya Sabha member, said he had offered many suggestions to party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to make TMC acceptable in Assam, but those were "not implemented".
"Assam TMC has great potential, but several recurring issues have hindered our progress, including the perception of TMC as a regional party of West Bengal. To counter this perception, we made several suggestions," Bora said in his resignation letter.

MHA constitutes central team to assess damage caused by floods in Gujarat
The Ministry of Home Affairs has constituted an inter-ministerial team to assess the damage caused by rainfall and floods in Gujarat.
The team will shortly visit the flood-affected districts of Gujarat, which was hit by heavy to extremely heavy rainfall between August 25 and 30 caused by a deep depression formed over Rajasthan and Gujarat, according to an official statement.
At least 25 people have died in rain-related incidents across the state on August 26 and 27.
The statement said the MHA has constituted an inter-ministerial central team (IMCT) led by the executive director, the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), to assess the damage caused by rainfall and floods in Gujarat, the statement said.

Two Border Security Force (BSF) camps have now turned into a school and hostel facility for children after the paramilitary force vacated them in Chhattisgarh's Naxalite-hit Kanker district, officials said on Sunday.
The BSF, which is extensively deployed in the district to curb Left Wing Extremism, vacated two camps, also called company operating bases, in Bondanar and Kadhai Khodra villages in Antagarh area and relocated to the interiors, they added.

Heavy rain inundates Guwahati, normal life affected
A spell of heavy rain early on Sunday inundated several arterial roads and residential areas in Assam's Guwahati, disrupting vehicular movement and causing inconvenience to residents of the capital city of the northeastern state.
People were seen wading through knee-deep waters in some areas of the city while the water level reached up to the chest in several localities.
Inundation was reported from Zoo Road, Nabin Nagar, Ganeshguri, Hedayetpur, Guwahati Club, Ulubari, Hatigaon, Gita Nagar, Maligaon, Lachit Nagar, Chandmari, Panjabari, Jorabat, Jatia, Jyotikuchi and Ghoramara and RG Baruah Road areas.

Leaders of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi on Sunday held a march from the iconic Hutatma Chowk to Gateway of India in south Mumbai to protest against the collapse of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district.
The statue of the 17th century Maratha warrior king at Rajkot fort in Malvan tehsil, some 480 kilometres from here, fell on August 26. It was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 4, 2023, on the occasion of Navy Day.
NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray, Congress state unit chief Nana Patole and the party's Mumbai head Varsha Gaikwad began the protest march by laying wreaths at Hutatma Chowk, a memorial to those martyred in the 'Samyukta Maharashtra' agitation.

The Israeli military has identified the bodies of six hostages recovered from a tunnel in the Gaza Strip and says their militant captors killed them shortly before Israeli forces could rescue them.
The army identified them as Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23; Ori Danino, 25; Eden Yerushalmi, 24; Almog Sarusi, 27; and Alexander Lobanov, 33; all of whom were abducted from a music festival during Hamas' October 7 attack. Gujarat rains: 24 crocodiles rescued from Vadodara's residential areas between Aug 27-29
A total of 24 crocodiles were rescued from residential areas in Gujarat's Vadodara amid very heavy rains between August 27 and 29, which led to the water level in the Vishwamitri river that flows through the city rising, a forest department official said on Sunday.
The river is home to 440 crocodiles, many of which move into residential areas during flooding caused by water release from the Ajwa dam, Vadodara Range Forest Officer Karansinh Rajput said.

BJP accuses Delhi govt of playing politics over pollution; AAP cites air quality improvement
The BJP on Saturday slammed the Delhi government, accusing it of indulging in "political gimmicks" and "letter game" with the Centre on the issue of air pollution plaguing the city, instead of taking concrete steps to tackle the health hazard.
However, the AAP, in a statement, noted improvement in the city's air quality. It claimed that its government has taken "unprecedented steps" to tackle pollution, which include promotion of electric vehicles, and switching 1,800 industrial units to cleaner piped natural gas.
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said the Kejriwal government should end it's "political gimmicks" and immediately call an all-party meeting with representation from its Punjab government, to discuss preparedness for tackling high air pollution levels in winter.
