LIVE UPDATES | Delhi Police to file Chargesheet in JNU sedition case; Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid likely to be named, say sources

The Delhi Police is set to file a chargesheet against a number of individuals, including former JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar, JNU student Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid for allegedly shouting anti-national slogans at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi in 2016.

According to sources, nearly 40 people have been named in the chargesheet including Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid.

If sources are to be believed, Shehla Rashid has been named in the column No.12, where she is an accused but the police don't have strong evidence against her.

Further, sources have also reported that Aparajita, daughter of CPI leader D Raja, has also been named in the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police. All the accused face sedition charges against them.

A police source close to the investigation said that the draft chargesheet has been sent to the prosecution department and legal. opinion is being taken over this. 

Sources have stated that the Delhi Police has got the CFSL report of the video footage  from JNU in which students were seen shouting anti-India slogans. The footage was sent to the CBI's CFSL which has prepared the report and sent it to the Delhi Police Special Cell. 

"We have made a few student leaders, security guards of JNU our witnesses to prove our case. We had found around 30 people suspicious, but we didn't have enough evidence to proceed against them," the source said.

On 9 February 2016, a programme was organized at the JNU premises to show anger against the hanging of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat. During the programme, students had allegedly chanted anti-India slogans. Kanhaiya Kumar and others were arrested but were later released on bail by the Delhi High Court.

I don't have any information yet but of its true that chargesheet has been filed, then I would like to congratulate PM Modi that at least after 3 years, chargesheet has been filed....We will not oppose this. The matter will come up for hearing on Tuesday
