New Delhi: Lunar Eclipse will occur this year in September and will be coinciding with Bhadrapada Purnima; lunar eclipse is considered inauspicious as per Hindu beliefs. Read to know the date, timing and Sutak Kaal of the Chandra Grahan 2024.

Lunar Eclipse 2024: Date and Time

The Lunar Eclipse 2024, known as the Chandra Grahan in Hindi, will occur on September 18, 2024 and will last for four hours and six minutes. The eclipse will start at 6:11 am and will end at 10:17 am on September 18, as per the Indian Standard Time (IST). It's peak time would be 8:14 am. 

Can Lunar Eclipse be Seen from India?

If you are planning to see the Chandra Grahan from India, note that the phenomenon will not be visible from our country, however, it can be seen online via the website of NASA. 

The eclipse will be visible in parts of Africa, Europe, South America and North America.

Chandra Grahan 2024: Sutak Kaal

As the lunar eclipse is considered inauspicious, the Sutak Kaal is the period during which no auspicious activities are performed and is only observed when the eclipse is visible to the naked eye.

Since the Chandra Grahan is not happening in India, Sutak Kaal will not be observed.

What is Lunar Eclipse?

According to NASA Science, lunar eclipses occur at the full moon phase. When Earth is positioned precisely between the Moon and Sun, Earth’s shadow falls upon the surface of the Moon, dimming it and sometimes turning the lunar surface a striking red over the course of a few hours. Each lunar eclipse is visible from half of Earth.
