Maha Rail plans to construct 17 road over bridges all across Mumbai

As a part of a joint venture between Maharashtra government and Indian Railways, the MRIDC is set to construct 17 cable-stayed bridges all over Mumbai

Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), also known as Maha Rail, recently came up with a joint venture between Maharashtra government and Indian Railways. venture is looking to construct cable-stayed bridges, much like Bandra-Worli sea link, all across Mumbai. 

17 bridges to be constructed

Maha Rail has been asked to construct a total of 17 ro over bridges (ROBs), including 15 that BMC has approached m with and 2 for which an MoU has been signed with MMRDA, in Mumbai. bridges will be built at both Central as well as Western Railways.

According to reports, tenders have been approached for enlisting of consultants for structural and architectural design that will help in rebuilding old ROBs in suburban area. Some of ROBs include ones at Byculla, Frere bridge (Grant Ro), Ollivant bridge (Mazgaon), Mahalaxmi, Bellasis Raod (Mumbai Central), Currey Ro, Tilak bridge, Reay Ro, to name a few.

Demolition to happen only after construction of new bridge

An official from MRIDC said that y are looking at consultants who specialize in designing of cable-stayed bridges. He also ded that se will come up only depending on wher or not it's feasible. While talking about public, he said that MRIDC were aware of inconvenience that demolishing existing ROBs would cause people. refore, plan was to construct new ROB right above old one and n demolish old one when new one is rey.

Mumbaikars are alrey facing a lot of trouble ever since complete demolition of Delisle bridge in Lower Parel, earlier this year. It has caused a lot of traffic trouble for motorists who have to take a detour. It is a sure shot that if similar demolitions take place at various or places, it will versely affect routine lives of people in Mumbai.

idea has supposedly come up owing to tensile strength and aestic aspect of cable-stayed bridges. All se ROBs are more than 100 years old and are very important to city. According to reports, few of m have now become weak and need to be demolished as a precautionary method to avoid any untoward incident.
