Members of local ivasi community on Tuesday have paid tribute to fallen trees of Aarey colony in Mumbai. Local residents came toger and offered a garland of flowers to a handme drawing of felled trees and lit candles in a tribute to trees that once stood re.
locals of Aarey fought against felling of trees till last moment. Many activists h also joined in struggle. A grieving girl from ivasi community expressed, "We tried a lot. We fought till very last, but we could t save you. Today, by watching se trees lying de on ground, I feel ashamed. I lost my family."

' more tree felling'
Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has promised that it will t cut more trees in Aarey as per Supreme Court's order, however, clearing of felled trees will continue at site. "We respect order of Supreme Court passed today. future tree felling activity at car shed site in Aarey Milk Colony will be undertaken. Or works, including clearing of alrey felled trees, will continue at site," MMRCL spokesperson said in an official statement. MMRCL has cut down 2141 trees out of its target of 2185 prior to Supreme Court's stay.

Aarey dispute
A protest which was being carried out over a few weeks escalated in last week when activists tried to sabot activity of tree felling. As many as 29 activists were under arrest on Saturday for restricting activity of tree felling and police cordoned off area. protestors filed a petition in Supreme Court against High court order, which was heard on October 7. Apex court passed a stay order prohibiting MMRCL from furr tree felling, maintaining status quo of Aarey colony. MMRCL h severed off 2141 trees out of a total of 2185 trees initially planned to chop off until Supreme Court order to prohibit tree felling activity furr. next hearing on matter is scheduled for October 21.
