The Centre plans to consolidate more than 60 buildings in relation to Mahatma Gandhi around the Sabarmati Ashram, as per sources. In lieu of the 150th birth anniversary of the Mahatma, the Centre has planned to construct a 'world-class' memorial to pay a tribute to the Father of the Nation. An announcement in this regard could be made on October 2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend an event on the Sabarmati Riverfront on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on Wednesday.

Consolidation of the Sabarmati Ashram
The Centre, in order to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, has planned to consolidate 61 buildings. These buildings have been standing still since the 1930s, and spread over 30 acres of land, these buildings are run by different trusts. The Sabarmati Ashram precincts were earlier called the Satyagraha Ashram which was spread over 120 acres and 28 gunthas of land till 1951. At the moment, there are around 150 families residing in the Ashram who are descendants of the individuals who were settled in by Mahatma Gandhi himself. The memorial has been spoken about for a while now, also finding mention in the 2017 Union Budget speech.

Mahatma Gandhi's commemoration at the UN
Earlier, PM Modi had been a part of the commemoration event of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary held at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Several leaders and dignitaries had been a part of the event along with the PM. The PM in his address had commented on Gandhi and his principles, that have had a huge impact on him. The PM in a statement had asserted that Gandhi had managed to touch even the lives of the people he had never met. Furthermore, with the United Nations honouring him, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Gandhi solar park, Gandhi peace garden and released the UN Postage stamps on Gandhi. He also highlighted that the 74th UNGA was significant because it was honouring Mahatma Gandhi, in his UNGA speech.
