Mamata Banerjee pegs loss due to cyclone 'Bulbul' at Rs 50,000 crore

Mamata Banerjee conducted an aerial survey of cyclone 'Bulbul'-hit areas in North 24 Parganas and said that total loss might go upto Rs 50,000 crore.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, after conducting an aerial survey of cyclone 'Bulbul'-hit areas in rth 24 Parganas, said on Wednesday that loss incurred by state due to natural calamity might go up to Rs 50,000 crore. Banerjee handed over a cheque of Rs 2.4 lakh each to family members of five people from district who lost ir lives in calamity.

Mamata Banerjee assures assistance to farmers

Taking te of fact that at least 15 lakh hectares of agricultural land was damd due to storm, she said affected farmers would get all help from her government.

"Going by what I have seen, I think cyclone has led to massive destruction. By massive, I mean really massive... People sitting in Kolkata and or parts of state will be t able to realise degree of devastation.

"If I'm t wrong, I think re has been a loss of Rs 50,000 crore," chief minister said at an ministrative review meeting here following reconnaissance.

Those who have enrolled ir names for state government's crop insurance scheme would get 100 per cent cover for ir loss, she asserted.

"A total of 15 lakh hectares of agricultural land has been damd. entire pdy cultivation has been ruined. I assure farmers of all form of support from our government. farmers under state's crop insurance policy will get hundred per cent cover," Banerjee said.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo furr said that state government would soon anunce a special pack for affected farmers. At least nine people have lost ir lives in calamity - five from rth 24 Parganas, three from South 24 Parganas and one from Purba Midnapore - while seven fishermen were still missing, Banerjee said during meeting. According to chief minister, six lakh people have been affected and over five lakh houses damd due to cyclone, which me landfall late on Saturday between Sagar Islands in West Bengal and Khepupara in Banglesh.

'Banglar Bari' scheme and ditional assistance for damd houses

CM gave assurances to rebuild damd houses under her government's 'Banglar Bari' scheme. She also anunced one hurricane lamp and five litres of kerosene for each affected family in state. Banejee directed education department to provide books to schoolchildren appearing for board examinations in storm-hit areas. On Monday, chief minister h surveyed storm- affected areas of Kakdwip, Namkhana and Bakhkhali in South 24 Parganas. She h urged people to "stay positive" and stand beside those affected by cyclone.
