Manipur: AMSU Puts Protest On Hold, Says 'External Forces Attempted To Divert Agitation'
AMSU said it observed attempts by political elements to distort true demands of the students and has identified deliberate efforts to tarnish the reputation.
Imphal: The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has put its protest on hold saying external forces were trying to divert the agitation and to tarnish the reputation of the student body and misrepresent their cause. The latest development is also in line with the Republic's Newsbreak which highlighted that political elements were involved in students protest.
In a press note, AMSU said that it organised a peace protest on September 9, 2024 against the acts of terror by Kuki militants, which have caused unrest in the state since May 3, 2023. Kuki militants resumed violence on September, attacking Meitei civilians with drone bombings and missile strikes, resulting in deaths and casualties.
On September 9, 2024, AMSU submitted a 6-point Charter of Demand to the Governor addressing the students' concerns. AMSU strongly condemns the violence during the protest, which left several students injured.
AMSU observed attempts by political elements to distort the true demands of the students and has identified deliberate efforts to tarnish the reputation of the student body and misrepresent their cause.
Amid the legitimate struggles of the people, external forces have attempted to divert the protest in a negative direction. The agitation is being put on hold until there is clarity and unity among the people regarding the core issues and the target of the agitation.
To ensure that the voice of the masses is truly heard and understood, AMSU will hold open discussions with individuals from different walks of life, including civil society members, community leaders, intellectuals, and concerned citizens.
