Manish Tewari: Confer Bharat Ratna to Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev & Rajguru

Congress leader Manish Tewari wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to accord the Bharat Ratna to Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru.

Congress leader and Member of Parliament from Anandpur Sahib, Manish Tewari wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urging him to accord India’s highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna to freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru. In the letter, he recalled their supreme sacrifice fighting the British colonial regime. He also called for the Chandigarh airport to be renamed after Bhagat Singh.

Letter to PM Modi

The letter read, “It would be in the fitness of things that: 

1. If on 26th of January, 2020 all three of them are honoured with the “Bharat Ratna” 

2. They are formally conferred with the honorific of “Shaheed-e-Azam" 

3. The Chandigarh Airport located in Mohali is named as Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Airport, Chandigarh (Mohali).  

This gesture would touch the hearts and souls of 124 crore Indians."

'Resisted against British imperialism'

Later, speaking to the media, Tewari revealed that the memorial of Bhagat Singh lays in his parliamentary constituency. Also, he mentioned that the three revolutionaries hailed from his previous constituency Ludhiana. Furthermore, he opined that it was never too late to honour revolutionaries.

Tewari said, “The memorial of Bhagat Singh lies in my parliamentary constituency. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were from my previous constituency Ludhiana. They resisted against British imperialism. The govt should bestow the honour to the martyr. I have also written to PM to change the name of Chandigarh airport after the name of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.” He added, “It is never too late to honour revolutionaries.”
