In his first term, Modi had addressed the nation on 53 occasions through his monthly broadcast after coming to power in 2014.

Having officially started on and from 3 October 2014, the program aims to deliver the Prime Minister's voice to the masses. Given the proliferation of the medium - estimated to reach 90% of India's population - radio was chosen to be the means for the communication.

'Mann Ki Baat' also has the distinction of becoming a major source of revenue for All India Radio, with ad slots fetching a premium.
