MEA: Government in touch with 80 Indian citizens remaining in China's Wuhan

MEA Dr. S Jaishankar was responding to a question during the proceedings in the Rajya Sabha; 70 citizens chose to stay back while 10 were barred from returning

Minister of External Affairs (MEA) Dr. S Jaishankar, on Friday, stated that 80 Indian students are still in Wuhan and efforts were being me to bring m back home. MEA was responding to a question during proceedings in Rajya Sabha.

Minister mentioned that 70 citizens h chosen to t be evacuated while or 10 were those who were barred from boarding flight since y showed symptoms of virus. Wuhan is epicentre of coronavirus outbreak and has claimed lives of 637 people and has infected 31, 211 people across China. "I want to assure House and families of those in Wuhan that embassy is in touch with all students and is regularly monitoring ir welfare," he said.

government of India has been taking extensive efforts to ensure that Indian citizens who are stuck in region. Last week, government arranged two Air India flights to bring back more than 600 citizens back to country. In second flight, seven citizens from Maldives were also brought back.

In Rajya Sabha, MEA stated that government of India h asked all neighbouring countries wher y wanted to d ir own citizens on plane back. "At time when two flights were going, we h told all students and larger community in Wuhan that we were prepared t only to bring back our own people but bring back all people in our neighbourhood who would like to come back. This was an offer which was me to all our neighbours, but of m, seven nationals of Maldives chose to avail offer. But offer was me to everybody."
