'Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu' India's newest Union Territory; Daman its HQ
The Parliament on December 3 passed Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (Merger of Union Territories) Bill, 2019 to merge the two Union Territories.

Parliament on December 3 passed Dra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (Merger of Union Territories) Bill, 2019 to merge two Union Territories. Rajya Sabha passed Dra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (Merger of Union Territories) Bill, 2019 through voice vote. Lok Sabha h alrey passed this bill on vember 27.
merged Union Territory will be named as Dra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Moreover, it would also continue reservation provided to people in two union territories and Bombay High Court will continue its jurisdiction over merged UTs.

Daman as hequarters of Union Territory
On January 22, Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave its approval for designation of Daman as hequarters of Union Territory of Dra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, making it capital of two merged UTs.
As per Cabinet decision, Central Goods and Service Tax Act, 2017 will be amended by Central Goods and Service Tax (Amendments) Regulation, 2020, Union Territory Goods and Service Tax Act, 2017 will be amended by Union Territory Goods and Service Tax (Amendments) Regulation, 2020, and Dra and Nagar Haveli Value ded Tax Regulation, 2005 will be amended by Dra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Value ded Tax (Amendments) Regulation, 2020.

Cabinet also decided that Daman and Diu Value ded Tax Regulation, 2005 will be removed by Daman and Diu Value ded Tax (Repeal) Regulation, 2020, Goa, Daman and Diu Excise Duty Act, 1964 amended by Dra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Excise Duty (Amendment) Regulation, 2020, and Dra and Nagar Haveli Excise Duty Regulation, 2012 will be axed by Dra and Nagar Haveli Excise Duty (Repeal) Regulation, 2020.

country currently has nine Union territories after creation of UTs of Jammu and Kashmir, and Lakh. However, with merger of Daman and Diu, and Dra and Nagar Haveli, number of UTs will come down to eight.
