MHA informs Parliament 'CAA rules are being framed'; deadline extended till July 2021
Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, that the rules for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act were being framed.

As Budget session of Parliament gets underway, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai informed Lok Sabha on Tuesday, that rules for Citizenship (Amendment) Act were being framed. Act which has come into force on January 10, 2020, is yet to be widely used as Centre is yet to frame rules for contentious law. Rai informed that Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have granted an extension of time up to April 9 and July 9, respectively to frame se rules. BJP has faced nationwide-backlash over law, especially in poll-bound Assam.

" Rules under Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 are under preparation. Committees on Subordinate Legislation, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have granted an extension of time up to April 9 and July 9, respectively to frame se rules under CAA," he said in a written reply. Recently, Home Minister Amit Shah h said rules of CAA are yet to be framed and law will be acted upon after COVID vaccination is completed.

Several protesters shouted slogans against Modi, Shah and Sowal and demanded that CAA and EIA be repealed along with implementation of report of Clause Six Committee.

What is CAA?
Citizenship (Amendment) Act amends previous Citizenship Act 1955 to make refugees who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Banglesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship. Moreover, Bill exempts inner line permit areas in Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Presh and areas falling under Sixth Schedule in regions. It will be applicable to members of se communities having arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014. Supreme Court is yet to hear 150 pleas challenging Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), after it refused to stay its implementation.
