Aizawl: At least 29 people were killed while several others are missing and trapped under the debris as a stone quarry collapsed in Mizoram's Aizawl district amid incessant rains on Wednesday morning. The incident happened around 6 am in an area between Melthum and Hlimen on the southern outskirts of the Aizawl town, they said.
Following the significant quarry collapse and landslide triggered by Cyclone Remal, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma held a emergency meeting with Home Minister K Sapdanga’n Zokhawthar, the DC, and other state officials and said that they are “monitoring the landslide situation”.
Five bodies have been recovered so far, while several others are still trapped under the debris, a police officer said. Heavy rains were affecting the rescue operations.
Speaking on the tragic incident, Mizoram DGP Anil Shukla said, “10 people have died as a stone quarry collapsed on the outskirts of Aizawl following incessant rains. Police personnel are engaged in rescue operations. The water levels of rivers are also rising up and many people living in the riverside areas have been evacuated.”
The rains triggered landslides at several places in the state, officials said.
Aizawl has been cut off from the rest of the country due to a landslide on National Highway 6 at Hunthar. Besides, several intra-state highways have also been disrupted by landslides.
Because of the rains, all schools were closed and government employees, except those involved in providing essential services, were asked to work from home.
