Mobile internet services in Assam to be restored on Friday

Guwahati High Court had earlier during the day directed the Assam government to restore mobile internet services at 5 pm on Thursday.

Assam government on Thursday said mobile internet services in state will be restored from Friday though Gauhati High Court h ordered restoration of service by 5 pm today.

"Tomorrow," Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told PTI in a reply to an SMS sent to him on Thursday seeking to kw when mobile internet services are likely to be resumed.

He, however, did t specify time. Broband services have alrey resumed in Assam.

Guwahati High Court h earlier during day directed Assam government to restore mobile internet services at 5 pm on Thursday. A division bench of Justices Majit Bhuyan and Saumitra Saikia gave direction after hearing four PILs filed by journalist Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, vocates Boshri Gogoi, Randeep Sharma and Debakanta Doley.

Mobile and broband internet services were suspended on evening of December 11 after incidents of violence during protests against amended Citizenship Act.

court observed that it is open to state authorities taking steps to curb dissemination of "explosive messs and video" on various social media platforms which may have a tendency to incite violence and destruction affecting public safety.

Sarma h said on Tuesday that government and security ncies were reviewing prevailing law and order situation daily and decision to lift ban on mobile internet would be taken on basis of intelligence feedback.
