In a major boost for the consumers, Mother Dairy has sold 5,000 tonnes of onions at a subsidised rate. Mother Dairy in lieu of the recent price hike in the case of onions made an effort to ensure that the customers do not have to stand in long queues for inexpensive produce. The initiative by Mother Dairy

As a consequence of the states being affected by floods and the hike in the price of onions, the Central Government has made an effort to provide relief to the consumers. Mother Dairy and cooperatives Nafed and NCCF are selling this stock in Delhi at subsidised rates. Sangram Chaudhary, the Managing Director of Mother Dairy said that the rise in onion prices is temporary. He asserted that the situation will improve once there will be an availability of fresh crop in November. Furthermore, he stated that there is no shortage of onions in the country.

'We are concerned about long queues for onion in front of our Safal outlets. We will bring in more quantities in the coming days.' Sangram Chaudhary said in a statement.

Chaudhary further added that currently, the company is functioning on a 'no-profit no-loss' policy in the case of onions. Mother Dairy had started by selling 20 tonnes of onions. At present, they are selling 150-200 tonnes per day. Mother Dairy’s fruit and vegetable arm Safal has 400 retail outlets in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurgaon.

Tackling the price hike

In lieu of the price hike, the Centre has recently banned the export of onions. The ban is to stay in place unless there are any other orders from the officials. The price rise of onions has increased exponentially in the last couple of weeks as a consequence of the incessant rains and flooding. The onion prices have reached an all-time high in the last four years.
