Mumbai: Bus Crashes into Pedestrians after Drunk Passenger Pulls Driver, 1 Killed

The driver lost control, causing the bus to veer off course and strike nine pedestrians. The injured were immediately rushed to KEM Hospital by the police.

Mumbai: A bus en route to Rani Laxmibai Chowk from Bhatiya Baug met with a tragic accident when a drunk passenger pulled the driver away from the steering wheel. The driver lost control, causing the bus to veer off course and strike nine pedestrians. The injured were immediately rushed to KEM Hospital by the police. Tragically, one woman succumbed to her injuries, while the other woman remains in the ICU with serious conditions.

Drunk Man Took Control of Steering Wheel

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday when a BEST bus was travelling on BA Road. According to police, Datta Murlidhar Shinde, who was intoxicated and standing next to the driver, allegedly took control of the steering wheel which distracted the driver causing the bus to veer off course and resulting in an accident.

One Dies, Several Injured

A 28-year-old woman, Nupur Maniar, who worked for the Income Tax Department and lived in Lalbaug, tragically died while being treated at KEM Hospital.

At the time of reporting, the Kalachowki police were in the process of recording the bus driver's statement and had registered a case against Shinde, who remains in police custody.

Police also informed that as the bus reached the Garam Khada junction in Lalbaug, Shinde, under the influence of alcohol, forcibly turned the steering wheel, causing the bus to collide with two cars, a motorcycle, and two pedestrians. The collision resulted in damage to the vehicles and injuries to nine individuals. Of the injured, two sustained major injuries such as fractures, while the others had minor injuries.
