Mumbai: Five people, including the contractor, have been booked after the deaths of three laborers following a slab collapse at a construction site in Malad on Thursday, police said. The accident, which occurred at an under-construction Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) building, also left three others seriously injured.

The Dindoshi police registered a case under sections 106(1) and 125(a) and 125(b) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita. As of Friday morning, no arrests had been made, according to officials.

The incident happened around 12:09 p.m. at the Navjeevan building located in Malad East's Govind Nagar. A portion of the slab on the 20th floor of the 23-story building caved in during routine concreting work. The slab collapsed on six workers who were working on different floors below.

According to authorities, four workers and a large amount of slurry and concrete material came crashing down. The falling debris hit other laborers working beneath, causing additional injuries. The victims were immediately rushed to Malad’s M W Desai Hospital, where three were declared dead.

The deceased have been identified as Gopal Banika Modi, 32; Sohan Jachil Rothe, 26; and Vinod Keshav Sadar, 26. The injured include Rupsan Mamin, 30; Jalil Rahim Shaikh, 45; and Mohammad Kalamuddin Shaikh, 30, police confirmed.

Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have started an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. The tragedy has raised serious concerns about safety protocols at construction sites in the city.

Further details on the investigation are awaited.
