Mumbai to face water shortage till July, lakes hit 2-year low in water levels

Mumbai: Mumbai, renowned for its resilience during monsoons, faces a looming water crisis as the seven lakes crucial to the city's water supply currently stand at 65 percent of their total capacity. This marks the lowest water stock in the last two years, raising apprehensions about potential shortages during the upcoming summer months.

Civic authorities estimate that the existing water supply might last until July 15, adding a layer of urgency to address the situation. 

However, a decision on implementing a water cut remains contingent on closely monitoring evaporation rates over the next three months, according to an official statement.

10% water cut last year 

Last year, Mumbai grappled with a 10 percent water cut enforced on July 1 due to lakes holding less than 7 percent of their water stock. 

The BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) utilized reserve quotas from Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa lakes to meet the city's water demand. 

Fortunately, heavy rains in July replenished the lakes, prompting the withdrawal of the water cut within a month.

P Velrasu, additional municipal commissioner (projects), reassured residents that the current water stocks are deemed sufficient, alleviating immediate concerns about water cuts.
