Mumbai Hit-and-Run: Man Dies After Being Struck by Speeding BMW; Driver Arrested

A 28-year-old man who was left severely injured after his two-wheeler was struck by a speeding BMW car in Mumbai's Worli area on July 20 has died in hospital.

Mumbai: In yet another case of hit-and-run, a 28-year-old man who was left severely injured after his two-wheeler was struck by a speeding BMW car in Mumbai's Worli area on July 20 has died in hospital, a police official said on Monday.

The incident occurred on Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road at Worli Seaface as Vinod Lad, a supervisor at a Thane-based transport firm, was heading home, where he lived with his cousin, according to the official. Bystanders took Lad to the hospital and alerted the police, he added.

"He died in Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central on Saturday. We have booked the accused, who was driving his employer to a five star hotel on Worli when the mishap took place. While he was earlier charged for causing grievous hurt through negligent driving, we have now added the section pertaining to causing death by negligent driving," the official informed.

Hit-and-Run Cases in Maharashtra

Rising hit-and-run cases have brought attention to several recent incidents in Mumbai and Pune. On July 9, a speeding BMW rammed into a two-wheeler on Annie Besant Road in Worli, resulting in the death of Kaveri Nakhwa and severe injuries to her husband, Pradip. The accused, Mihir Shah, along with his family driver and father, were arrested for allegedly attempting to destroy evidence and mislead investigators.

On July 22, a speeding Audi collided with two autorickshaws in Mulund, in the northeastern tip of the city, injuring three people.

On May 19, a minor driving a Porsche while inebriated knocked down a motorcycle in Kalyani Nagar, Pune, killing two IT professionals from Madhya Pradesh. This case garnered national headlines when the minor received bail from the Juvenile Justice Board on lenient terms. A subsequent police investigation revealed multiple attempts to destroy evidence, including the swapping of blood samples intended for alcohol tests.
