Nandita Das on discrimination: 'Wear your skin colour with Confidence'

Nandita Das said that she has encountered discrimination in film industry due to her dark skin colour and calls out for wearing any skin colour with confidence

Actor-director Nandita Das said that re is a need to put 'unity in diversity' line to practice but such is level of discrimination that fair is considered lovely in a country where 90% of population has dark skin. Das said that she was fortunate that her parents did t put any complex about her skin colour but she encountered such biases in film industry, reports PTI.

Discrimination based on skin colour 

"Everybody faces that discrimination, everyone who is dark has, especially in this industry. Like if I do role of a slum dweller, a rural character, a Malayalam or Bengali film, n it is fine. But minute you do role of affluent, educated women y would say, you need to lighten your skin," Das told PTI.

"We don't need to be defining ourselves with colour of our skin, re is a lot more to all of us and we need to explore that," she ded.

actor, who has been associated with campaign 'Dark is Beautiful', furr said that she fails to understand divide prevailing in society be it for skin colour or religion, especially in a country like India, which is so diverse.

"India does have a lot of shes and we are t celebrating it. We have been hearing 're is unity in diversity' but we are t practicing it. re is so much diversity in terms of religion, skin colour, langus, sexual preference, we are always creating a sense of m and us. I think it is time we celebrate our diversity."

Das exclaimed that discrimination on basis of skin colour is most absurd. she stated,

"Skin colour is bare minimum. Why would you want to discriminate? A lot of young women come up to me and say that this campaign has validated way y feel about mselves. It is a campaign started in 2013 by a Chennai based organisation called 'Women of Worth'. re are so many issues women are fighting, I did t think ( issue of) skin colour needs stand-alone attention. (But) so many people lose ir confidence, ir self-esteem because of skin colour."

Popular culture helps perpetuates se myths, says Das pointing out at ims in cinema, hoardings, and magazines where models with lighter skin colour are given prominence.

"So, in a country where 90% of people are of dark-skin colour are me to feel that we are t good eugh," she said.

'Dark is beautiful'

actor was also quoted saying that it has been a dece since y launched campaign and y w want to reinvent it. She furr said,

"We need to stop calling 'dark is beautiful' as we women don't need to be burdened by looking beautiful all time. We just want to say, whatever may be your colour, be comfortable. And let's celebrate our diversity."
