NCP MP Majeed Memon questions Amit Shah over protests, calls for proper scrutiny of Bills
NCP leader Majeed Memon on Monday questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the ongoing protests and violence in different parts of the country over the CAA.

NCP leader Majeed Memon on Monday questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah on ongoing protests and violence in different parts of country. He raised doubts over wher Citizenship Amendment Act was beneficial to people of country. Alleging that government was manipulating numbers in Parliament for pass of legislation, he criticised it for t seeking proper scrutiny of Bills. He contended that this could have disastrous consequences.

Protests in Delhi
Memon’s remarks assume significance in wake of clashes in national capital on Sunday. People protesting against CAA clashed with police in New Friends Colony near Jamia Millia Islamia University leaving nearly 60 people injured. Subsequently, re were reports of students being injured and detained as police entered Jamia campus. In early hours of Monday, 50 students were released by police from Kalkaji police station and New Friends Colony police station.

What is CAA?
CAA seeks to provide citizenship to mirity communities namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. This will be applicable to members of se communities having arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014. Moreover, y will t be considered as illegal migrants. Additionally, mandatory residence period for naturalised citizenship for se communities would be reduced to 5 years. Several states in rth East have witnessed protests against this legislation. opposition contends that Act discriminates on basis of religion, which might go against Article 14, which guarantees right to equality. Incidentally, Memon who is also a Rajya Sabha MP was absent during voting process due to health reasons.
