NCW to organise 'Power Walk' to spread awareness on women's safety

The NCW will be organising a 'Power Walk' in the national capital next week in which rape and acid attack survivors will take part to raise awareness about violence against women and their safety, its chairperson Rekha Sharma said.

NCW will be organising a 'Power Walk' in national capital next week in which rape and acid attack survivors will take part to raise awareness about violence against women and ir safety, its chairperson Rekha Sharma said.

Speaking to PTI, Sharma said National Commission for Women will be organising 'Power Walk' on March 1 from 7 to 8 pm.

"In Delhi, walk route is from India Gate to Janpath, and rape and acid attack survivors will walk with us. We have also invited Nirbhaya's mor," Sharma said.

She said similar walks will be held in 14 or states too, including Himachal Presh, Tamil Nu and Uttar Presh.

" power walk is a drive to instill, with a belief that, only way to make public s safe is to occupy in large numbers, and put out mess clearly, wher day or night, women have equal right to claim her s everywhere and anywhere," Sharma said.

"We must break rms on defining respectability like, 'safe and unsafe', 'good eugh reason or t' for her to get out of house - such perception of a woman in public s must change," she ded.

Sharma said before walk, 'nukk nataks' on eve-teasing and acid attacks will be held.

"We are also planning to call a few of acid attack and rape survivors who will be talking about what y have gone through. We are expecting 1,000 men and women to participate in walk," NCW chief said.

Talking on issue of women safety, Sharma said re is a need to change mindset of people.

"Police is working but after crime has occurred. crime should t take place at first place and for that, mindset of people has to change and walk is an attempt towards that," she ded.

Tennis player Sania Mirza has also extended her support to initiative through a video mess that was shared by NCW on Twitter.

"A is labelled safe or unsafe depending upon visibility of women in that area. To challenge this stereo and break all shackles that hinder free movement of women, I urge all of you to go for power walk and claim your unconditional right to move freely and fearlessly whenever and wherever you wish to be," Mirza said.
