Need to rewrite history from India's point of view: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said had it not been for Veer Savarkar, the First War of Independence in 1857 would have been regarded as a revolt.

Stressing on need to rewrite history from India's point of view, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said h it t been for Veer Savarkar, First War of Independence in 1857 would have been regarded as a revolt.

His remarks came two days after Maharashtra BJP unit said in its election manifesto that party will ask Centre to confer Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, on V D Savarkar.

"H it t been Veer Savarkar, 1857 'kranti' (war) would t have become history and we would have been seeing it from British point of view," home minister said.

"It was Savarkar who gave name 'First War of Independence' to 1857 'kranti' orwise our children would have kwn it as a revolt," he said.

Shah inaugurated a two-day international seminar here on 'Guptvanshak-Veer: Skandgupta Vikramitya' at Banaras Hindu University.

Referring to eminent historians in audience and on dais, he said, "It is my request to all that re is a need to rewrite Indian history from India's point of view but without blaming anyone."

"It is our responsibility to write our history. How long are we going to blame British? We don't have to dispute anyone, only write what is truth and it will stand test of time," Union home minister said.

Shah regretted that today's generation was t aware of contributions and valour of Skandgupta Vikramitya because of lack of documentation.

While dwelling at length on role and relevance of famous ruler of Gupta Dynasty, Skandagupt Vikramitya, he spoke on political future of nation and also took opportunity to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making India regain national respect in world.

"Respect for country has increased under him. world pays attention to our point of view. world listens when our PM speaks on international developments," Shah said.
