Nitin Gadkari on MV Act: 'Even Sonia, Kejriwal support stricter fines'

Union Ro Transport Minister Nitin Gkari on Friday said that purpose behind hiking penalties for traffic offenses was to save lives, and even Sonia Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have supported move. Defending amended Motor Vehicles (MV) Act at a recently held conclave in Mumbai, Gkari recalled his own traumatic experience of a ro accident.

"High penalties under Act are t a means for revenue generation. y are meant to save lives," he said during an interactive session."

Five lakh accidents take place (in country) every year, in which about 1.5 lakh people die, nearly three lakh become disabled. 65% of victims are in group of 18 to 35 years," he said.

Relaxation of fines in some States 

When asked by interlocutor about opposition to hiked fines by even BJP-ruled states such as Gujarat, he said, "Why don't you also mention that (Congress President) Sonia Gandhi and (Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leer) Arvind Kejriwal have supported Act. "Recalling a personal experience, Gkari said that when he was leer of opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council, he and his family members were injured in a ro accident, and he was hospitalised for a year.

"I understand sufferings (of accident victims)," BJP leer said. He went on saying that penalties can be decided by states and denied that re was any rift between Centre and BJP-ruled States over issue. State governments can levy fines in range between minimum and maximum limits prescribed in Act, he said.

Gkari on Ecomic Slowdown

When asked about ecomic slowdown, Gkari said that ecomy was facing some problems because of global situation, demand-supply dynamics, and business cycles. "Ups and downs are t permanent. GDP will recover. We are doing better than USA and China. We must keep a positive attitude. ecomy will accelerate. objective of five trillion USD ecomy will be achieved," senior Minister said.

Gkari, who also holds Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises portfolio, said that MSME's contribution to ecomy is 29%.

"We have a plan to boost MSME sector with a provision of Rs 10,000 crore. If MSMEs list with National Stock Exchange, out of total capital raised, 10 percent capital will be from Government," he said.

While real estate sector was going through a slump, but  infrastructure and ro sector was doing well, Gkari claimed.

On Narendra Modi government's 2016 decision to scrap nearly 86% of currency to fight black money, which some ecomists described as a body blow to ecomy, Gkari said that demonetisation was a "reform" and t a problem.
