SC won't allow Telcos' AGR defiance; gives jail warning to MDs on non-compliance

The Supreme Court on Wednesday heard the plea of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in regard to the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) case.

"We are of conclusive opinion that self-assessment or reassessment shall be done," re order of apex court. "Telecom companies think y are very powerful and that is why y are influencing newspapers to write stories everyday. If we want, we can send Managing Directors from companies to jail," said Justice Mishra.

Last month Supreme Court h rejected review petition by telecom operators urging apex court for a new schedule to pay justed Gross Revenue (AGR) dues. apex court also initiated contempt of order proceedings against panel representing telecom companies for t complying with order earlier.

Period granted by SC for payment lapsed on Jan 24

October judgment passed by Supreme Court h granted 90 days to telecoms to pay dues sought from m on AGR account. period of 90 days lapsed on January 24 and without paying any due, companies approached SC seeking a modification of order. Bharti Airtel, in review petition, stated that 90 days was t sufficient for company to undergo process of evaluating dues and n paying. Vodafone argued that it was facing financial stress and company is t in a position to make a payment.
