Odisha to return big cat to MP after NTCA suspends tiger translocation prog

With National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) suspending tiger translocation programme in Odisha's Satkosia Tiger Reserve, state government will return a female big cat to Mhya Presh from where she was brought in June last year, officials said. tigress was kept in a restricted open enclosure after she h allegedly killed two persons in tiger reserve in Angul district.

NTCA h objected to it, saying that tigress cant be allowed to be kept in a small enclosure. In a letter to chief secretary of Odisha, NTCA h said, in interest of tiger conservation, tigress shall be withdrawn and brought to Ghorela Centre at Kanha Tiger Reserve, Mhya Presh with immediate effect for re- wilding and subsequent release to a suitable habitat.

"We have written to Mhya Presh government to take back tigress in view of NTCA's directive," Odisha Chief Wildlife Warden Hari Shankar Uphay told reporters on Thursday. Uphay said MP government will make arrangements to shift tigress.

Ar male tiger was allegedly poached inside Satkosia Tiger Reserve. NTCA h informed Odisha government that tiger translocation programme at Satkosia Tiger Reserve will remain suspended till ground situation improves.
